Industry, Environment, and Community
Get to know Rochester from a new perspective. Learn about the natural resources, technological innovations, and community organizations that made the city what it is today. This course will offer a deeper history of the city over a century of industrial boom-and-bust, demographic shifts, and labor movements – and of the lived experience of people who have navigated community resilience in the face of contemporary concerns over legacy pollution and the economic effects of globalization. This class blends readings and discussion with experiential learning and community-based research projects to help students understand community identity as a result of changes in livelihoods, immigration, and environment.
Highlight! Students will have an opportunity to interact with community residents who worked for some of Rochester’s industries and collect photographs of a changed economic landscape.
